John J. Coughlin, Esq. is a principal of the Law Firm of Bogle, DeAscentis & Coughlin, P.C.
His practice areas cover real estate (commercial/residential/land conservation projects), municipal law, corporations, bankruptcy creditors’ rights, civil litigation, wills, trusts and probate of estates.
In addition to his private practice of law he presently serves as Town Counsel to the Town of Hingham, Massachusetts (2012-Present) and as Corporation Counsel to the Fall River Redevelopment Authority (2011-Present). He previously served as Assistant Corporation Counsel for the City of Fall River for ten years. In that position he represented the municipality in all areas of municipal law including civil litigation in state and federal court.
Prior to joining Bogle, DeAscentis & Coughlin, P.C. he was with the law firm of McGuire & Coughlin. He left that firm upon the appointment of his fellow attorney Thomas F. McGuire, Jr. as a judge in the Superior Court of Massachusetts.
He is admitted to the bar in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts; United States District Court, Massachusetts; United States Court of Appeals, First Circuit; and the Supreme Court of the United States.
Attorney Coughlin recently completed several large scale real estate projects: He represented the Town of Hingham on the purchase of a private water company from Aquarion Water Company of Massachusetts for $110 million to be converted to a public water system owned and operated by the Town of Hingham as the Weir River Water System serving 13,000 customers. He represented Buzzards Bay Coalition and Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust on the purchase of a 115 acre parcel for $8.1 million for permanent conservation protection on Allens Pond in Dartmouth, MA. This project involved a combination of public and private funding resulting in the largest conservation project ever completed on the coast of Buzzards Bay. He represented Buzzards Bay Coalition on the purchase of 68 acres on Cuttyhunk Island for $6.1 million for permanent conservation protection. He represented the Westport Land Conservation Trust on the purchase of 123 acres for the Santos Farm Conservation Project for permanent conservation protection. He represented the Fall River Redevelopment Authority on the sale of a 77 acre parcel for $3.7 million for the construction of a new one million square foot Amazon distribution facility in Fall River, MA which has created hundreds of local jobs.
He is a member of the Massachusetts Bar Association; Bristol County Bar Association; Massachusetts Bar Foundation Life Fellow; Massachusetts Real Estate Bar Association; and Massachusetts Municipal Lawyers Association.
He is a graduate of Northeastern University, Boston, MA, with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a graduate of Suffolk University Law School, Boston, MA, with a J.D. law degree.
While in law school he was an author and staff member for the Suffolk Transnational Law Review.
