His practice covers a broad range of real estate, land use, development and preservation, affordable housing initiatives and financing for land owners, developers and institutional and personal investors. He has substantial transactional experience in commercial and residential real estate matters, and has represented institutions and individuals in land use permitting, preservation, adverse possession, boundary line disputes, rights of way issues, actions to quiet and defend title, tax takings and foreclosures. He also provides representation in the organization of and counseling to businesses, including non-profit organizations, and has assisted clients with Massachusetts wills, health care directives and estates.
Mr. DeAscentis is former chairman of the Zoning Board of Appeals for the City of Fall River and member of the City’s Master Plan Committee and its Zoning Ordinance Subcommittee. He has also served on the management plan committee for the Southeastern Massachusetts BioReserve, a public-private partnership for the preservation and management of approximately 14,000 acres of undeveloped land in and around the Copicut and North Watuppa watershed areas, and the Freetown-Fall River State Forest.
Active in civic matters, Attorney DeAscentis is a Director and 2nd Vice Chairperson of YMCA Southcoast, for which he is also its Annual Campaign Co-Chair. Supportive of the arts, Attorney DeAscentis is a Director and past Chair of the Board of the Narrows Center for the Arts. He was also a Director and Board Clerk of a small community savings bank, and has served on the Mayor’s Task Force on Homelessness. He was an SJC appointee to the Mental Health Legal Advisors Committee, and was a 15 year Director of the Board for Southeastern Massachusetts Legal Services, serving as Chairman for two years.
A graduate of Syracuse University, receiving his AB in 1974, Arthur received his JD from the School of Law at Western New England University in 1979. He began his legal career as a legal services staff attorney providing representation to low income persons, with a concentration in public housing and institutional mental health issues. Attorney DeAscentis is a fellow of the Massachusetts Bar Foundation, and a member of the Massachusetts Real Estate Bar Association, and the American, Massachusetts and Fall River Bar Associations. His firm is a sponsor member of Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education Inc.
A dedicated New Englander, Attorney DeAscentis enjoys winter snows as much as the summer ocean waters, in which he swims between May and October. He can be found biking New England’s quieter roads until North Country snows beckon him to trade in his road bike for his cross-country skis.
